Osteoarthritis is fundamentally about cartilage breakdown. The smooth, slick tissue cushioning your joint surfaces gradually becomes rougher, thinner, and less effective. In advanced cases, it can wear away completely in areas, leaving bone rubbing on bone.
But it’s not just passive wear and tear like tires on a car. Your body actively responds to cartilage damage in ways that create additional problems.
